How did slot machines start
In the early 20th century, the gaming industry was primarily made up of flappers and hucksters. These characters were known for their crude and explicit behavior, and their fixation on slot machines. This created what was known as the slot machine madhouse.Despite the negative reputation these characters had, they were not without merit. Among their talents were the ability to predict a persons lifestyle and tastes, as well as their ability to string together coherent sentences.Notwithstanding these skills, they did not have a spectacular future ahead of them. As a result of this, they were forced to take up any job that would get them money quickly. This would eventually lead them to the gambling industry, where they faced both massive profits and low-skilled workers.
How did slot machines work before computers?
Prior to the invention of the computer, each individual gaming machine was programmed to predict the winning probability for each potential outcome. This meant that each one was a self-contained autonomous system, with its own unique set of rules and pay tables. The results from any single gaming machine were combined together using a random number generator to produce the overall result (or end result), which was then broadcast to other gaming machines via a point-to-point data link. This is how slot machines used to work prior to the invention of the computer!
